The Online Dating Game

Once upon a time we would have all considered the online dating game to only service the sad folk A forum for the socially inept to gather together and pair up, a desperate group left standing after the school team had long been picked.

Those ‘online daters’ would be met with suspicion in a world where every woman dreams of being swept off her feet by her dream man after love at first sight and a fairytale whirl wind romance.

What’s changed our perceptions?

The marketing man has certainly played his part in proceedings, with corporate images that validate our choice to search for love online. Eharmony & match.com are a case in point, depicting younger candidates for love with covetable looks and life styles to match. In truth online dating as a growing market has expanded from our demand for a quick and accessible way to meet people.

In a Face book society where Internet based relationships are part of everyday life and in a fast paced, hectic whirl, which is most peoples work/life, imbalance online dating allows us to quickly plug in to people outside of our network or social group and discount those that don’t quite meet your criteria.

Lets face it On-line dating can be an exercise in time management.

I had a friend who was the eternal lad about town (and about town he went) there really was no stone left unturned! He decided that he wanted something more from a partner and would like to settle down. His penchant for twenty something clubbers and one night stands passed and although he didn’t want marriage and children at 40 something certainly wanted a partner and relationship with meaning. Where do you go to meet a woman that matches your very specific needs at that point in your life?

Work Place? Supermarket? He met his partner 6 years ago through a dating site and they are the perfect match leaving me with the perception of on line dating as a solution rather than something to be ashamed of.
